Tag clouds are everywhere on the web these days. First popularized by the web sites Flickr, Technorati, and del.icio.us, these amorphous clumps of words now appear on a slew of web sites as visual evidence of their membership in the elite corps of "Web 2.0." Compared to conventional navigation patterns tag clouds don't necessarily offer a more convenient and intuitive navigation. However, used properly, they can provide visitors with an instant illustration of the main topics, giving a very specific and precise orientation of the site's content. Since human beings tend to think in concepts and models, it's easier to get an idea of presented content if the main concepts are given straight away — in digestible pieces, and prioritized by their weight. In fact, the main advantage of tag clouds lies in their ability to highlight the most important or/and popular subjects dynamically which is not the case in conventional navigation menus.

Tagging has become an essential part of browsing the internet these days. If you have read my previous two posts on tagging you would now know why I am not a big fan of the concept and I am not alone in this regard. Well if it is proving to be a necessary evil then it better be easy. Here I did a bit of research regarding the visualization of tags and their usability. There is no denying the fact that more and more people are taking to the net these days and with all these tags flying around their usability is a central tenet that would determine the longevity of the idea.
